A Musical Triumph for EEB1: Choir Wins Gold in Bratislava
From March 20th to 23rd, the European School Brussels 1 Secondary Choir participated in the International Bratislava Spring Music Festival. Under the direction of Joanna Musko, 73 students showcased their talent, accompanied by Agnieszka Zywert on the piano, and supported by three other Uccle teachers and staff.
The choir achieved outstanding success, winning gold in both competition categories they entered:
- Folk Song with Instrumental Accompaniment
- Youth Choirs (up to 21 years old)
But that’s not all! The choir also received the gold award for the highest score in the Youth Choirs category and was honored with the prestigious title of Winner of the Category, surpassing even a choir of conservatory music students.
This year’s festival featured 14 ensembles from Belgium, the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ukraine, and the United States.
The trip was incredibly inspiring and successful. In total, the choir performed six concerts—five in Bratislava and one in Vienna. In Austria, they had the privilege of presenting a full-length concert for Chorus Juventus, the senior group of the world-renowned Vienna Boys’ Choir. After the concert, the choir had the unique opportunity to meet the young singers and their conductor, exchange experiences, and share a passion for music.
However, what remains most unforgettable is the overwhelming enthusiasm of the audiences and fellow choir members during the performances. The name of EEB1 resonated at every event, and the choir received countless warm and appreciative words. It was incredibly moving to see the phrase “Left us speechless…” displayed on a photo from the festival’s opening concert, shared by the organizers on social media.
While the festival required immense dedication—both in preparation and throughout the tour—the trip to Vienna and Bratislava provided unforgettable experiences and cherished memories. It has been a tremendous source of motivation, inspiring the choir to continue growing and developing.
